The best maths exercises don't look like exercises — they look like fun. A child who adds during a game practises the same numbers dozens of times, without getting bored or fearing a mistake. Here are five games you can make at home in two minutes, without buying anything — plus a handful of no-prop ideas, tips on matching the difficulty, and how to talk so counting becomes a habit.

Why play teaches addition more effectively

In a game, a child is active and discovers the answer instead of passively writing it down. Classic research on early number learning found that children who played simple number games built stronger number sense than those who practised with worksheets alone¹. Playful, hands-on counting boosts interest in maths and supports learning more than purely formal tasks², and even a few minutes of regular play can have lasting effects.

A game also lifts the pressure: a slip in play doesn't sting like a "wrong answer" in a notebook, so a child tries again more readily. And because the same numbers come back dozens of times in a game, addition sticks without the boredom of copying columns. A game also shows addition in action: the child watches two groups join into one and hears the language ("we add," "altogether") they'll meet at school. Game 1: Dice Race

You need: 2 dice, paper, pencil.

Rules: each player rolls both dice and adds the dots. Higher total wins a point. After 10 rounds, count the points. Tie? Sudden death!

Why it works: repetition (the child adds a dozen times in one game), immediate motivation (they want to win), and randomness (even if they're weaker at counting, they can still win).

Easier version: one die — the child adds the roll to their running total. First to reach 30 wins. Harder version: three dice, adding one at a time, crossing the ten.

Game 2: Store

You need: pennies (10–20), household "goods" with prices.

Draw prices on sticky notes: apple = 3 cents, banana = 5 cents, cookie = 4 cents. The child "buys" two items and works out how much to pay. You're the cashier checking they give the right amount.

Why it works: real context (a store), tangibility (coins), and an adult role (the child feels important).

Harder version: the child has a "budget" of 10 cents and must work out what they can afford.

Game 3: Math Memory

You need: 20 cards (10 pairs). One card has an operation (e.g., "3 + 4"), the other the answer (e.g., "7").

Lay the cards face-down. Players take turns flipping 2 cards. If the operation matches the answer — pair won! Most pairs wins.

Why it works: it combines visual memory with maths. The child sees the same operations and answers over and over — automatisation happens naturally.

Easier version: start with 5 pairs within 6, so the layout doesn't overwhelm.

Game 4: Cup Tower

You need: 10 plastic cups, a marker.

Write the numbers 1–10 on the cups. Draw two cups at random — the child adds the numbers. Correct answer? Stack the cup on the tower. Who builds a taller tower?

Why it works: the construction element (building the tower) gives physical satisfaction with every correct answer.

Harder version: three cups at once — adding three numbers.

Game 5: Addition in Motion

You need: nothing! Just floor and legs.

Draw a number line from 0 to 10 (or 0 to 20) with chalk (on the pavement) or tape (on the floor). The child stands on the starting number (say, 4), you roll a die — the child jumps that many spaces. What number did they land on?

Why it works: physical movement plus maths is double stimulation. Perfect for children who can't sit still — and it shows addition beautifully as a "jump to the right."

What to have on hand — a little game kit

To get a game going in seconds, keep a few simple things in one box — you almost certainly have them all:

  • Two or three dice — a ready-made problem generator.
  • A deck of cards (values 1–10) — for sum games.
  • A handful of counters — blocks, buttons, chestnuts — for counting and checking.
  • Cups and sticky notes — for the "tower" and memory.
  • Chalk or tape — to draw a number line on the floor.

Keep them together, within reach. The lower the barrier, the more often you'll reach for five minutes of play instead of a worksheet.

A few no-prop games

The best games are the ones you can play anywhere — in the car, in a queue, in a waiting room:

6. "How many together?" riddles. "I've got 6 in my head. Add 3. How many now?" The child counts with nothing to look at. Then swap roles — children love setting riddles for grown-ups.

7. Numbers around us. "I see 4 cars, 3 more arrive — how many altogether?" or "There were 2 birds, 4 more flew in — how many?" The surroundings hand you numbers to add.

8. Count-on in steps. Take turns counting on by a fixed number: 2, 4, 6, 8… or 3, 6, 9… Whoever slips "passes." It's a gateway to multiplication and great practice of number rhythm.

These games cost nothing and teach mental arithmetic — exactly where we're headed anyway.

Paper games — when you have pen and paper

Sometimes the best "equipment" is a plain sheet of paper. These work at the table, in a café, or when you just need to sit for a moment:

9. Addition bingo. Each player draws a 3×3 grid and fills it with answers from 2 to 12. You read out problems ("5 + 4"), the child crosses off the answer if they have it. First to a row shouts "bingo!" The child works out every problem, even ones that aren't theirs.

10. Number snake. Write a chain: "3 + 4 + 2 + 1 = ?" The child works left to right, writing the result after each addition. Great for order and "holding" a number in mind.

11. Tic-tac-toe with sums. Put an operation in each square of a 3×3 grid. To place your mark, you have to give the right answer. A classic game gets a maths twist.

Paper games have one more advantage: they leave a trail. The child sees how much they've done and wants "just one more round."

How to match the difficulty

For a five-year-old, keep the numbers small (sums to 6–10) with concrete objects. For a six- to seven-year-old, raise the range to 20 and add games that practise crossing ten (a three-dice race, say). One rule: a game should be slightly too easy, not slightly too hard — that's when a child wants to keep playing. This hands-on, playful approach is exactly what early-maths educators recommend³. Don't turn a game into a test — frequency beats length.

Partners of ten in a game

It's worth weaving in one exercise that pays off most: pairs that make 10. Play "make ten" — you show a number (on fingers or a card), and the child says how many are missing to reach ten. Or a card version: hunt for pairs of cards that add to 10.

How to talk during play

Words matter. Name the action: "we add three… let's count together." Praise the method, not just the right answer: "clever, you counted on from the bigger number." Don't supply the answer straight away — the silence while a child thinks is valuable; count to five in your head before helping. When they slip, don't say "wrong"; count it again together with objects. Keep the tone light: this is playing with numbers, not an exam.

Common parent mistakes with games

Even a good game can put a child off if we fall into a few common traps:

  • Turning the game into a test. "So what's the answer?" in an exam voice kills the fun. Play along, don't quiz.
  • Jumping in too fast. Give the child time to think, even if it takes a moment.
  • Pitching it too high. If a child loses again and again, the game stops being fun. Better slightly too easy.
  • Correcting every slip. Not every mistake needs fixing on the spot — sometimes it's better to finish and check together.
  • Sessions that run too long. Stop before the child gets bored — leave them wanting the next round.

When your child finds it hard

If you see discouragement, drop the numbers lower (to 5) and go back to counting with objects — no rush, no competition. Choose cooperative games where you "win together," and set the level so success comes often. Name the feeling, too, instead of ignoring it: "I can see this is tricky right now — let's do an easier version." A short, successful game once a day does more than a long, frustrating session now and then.

Make games a family ritual

Games have the most power when they become a steady part of the week, not a one-off "exercise." Agree on a "games night" once or twice a week — the same few games you return to. Repetition helps learning, and a ritual means the child looks forward to the shared time rather than avoiding it.

You can keep a simple "champions' chart" on the fridge and add a sticker for every game played — not for winning, but for taking part. The point is to reward playing, not just the result. When counting feels like a good moment at the table, a child asks for more — and then the learning takes care of itself. You don't have to play them all: two or three favourites you happily return to beat ten games played once each.

Addition in everyday moments

Not everything has to be a board "game." The best practice often happens in passing:

  • At the table: "there are 3 plates, add 2 — how many now?"
  • In the kitchen: "we have 4 eggs and bought 3 — how many altogether?"
  • On a walk: count on, adding things you pass.
  • At the shop: "there were 2 apples in the basket, we add 5 — how many now?"

These micro-questions, woven through the day, do more than one long session — because the child sees that numbers are useful. The key is a light tone: ask out of curiosity, don't "test." And now and then, swap roles — let the child set a problem for you. Inventing problems is a sign they understand addition, not just compute it.

When to Move Beyond Home Games?

Home games are great, but they have limits: you need time and energy to prepare, the difficulty range is fixed (dice always give 1–6), and you're the one watching for feedback — a child can make a mistake without noticing.

What age are these games for? Most work from age 5 with small numbers; the crossing-ten versions suit ages 6–7. Set the level so success comes often.

How long should we play each day? Short and regular wins — a few to a dozen minutes. One game a day in a good mood beats a long session once a week.

My child loses and gets discouraged — what do I do? Choose cooperative games (like building a tower together) over competition, and set the level so success is frequent.

Do I need ready-made board games? No. Dice, cards, cups and a sheet of paper cover a dozen games. Ready-made boards can be a nice extra, but they aren't what teaches — the counting you do with them is.

How do I combine addition and subtraction in games? The easiest way is "undoing": after adding, subtract back and check you land on the starting number. You can also play "add one round, take away the next."

Is playing on a tablet the same as playing "live"? Variety is best. Games with a parent give contact, shared talk, and joy; a good app adds difficulty progression and immediate feedback. Each complements the other — it's worth mixing rather than choosing "either/or."
