Lives and Badges in EduBert — Why We Don't Punish Mistakes

In many educational games, a mistake means punishment — lost points, sent back to the start, a big red "GAME OVER." In EduBert, a mistake means something different: "Try again." Below we explain exactly how the system of three hearts and three lives works, what really happens after a mistake versus after losing all your lives, and why this setup helps a child learn without fear.
The Problem with Punishing Mistakes
When a child is afraid of answering wrong, they stop answering. They guess instead of thinking — or put the tablet down and say "I don't like math." This isn't a problem with the child; it's a problem with a system that punishes trying.
Research on growth mindset (Carol Dweck¹) shows that children who treat mistakes as part of learning do better than those who see them as failure. Jo Boaler's work on math norms makes the same point even more strongly: struggle and mistakes are exactly when the brain grows, and fear of error is one of the biggest brakes on learning². In both cases the conclusion is the same: how the environment — a game included — responds to a mistake decides whether a child keeps trying.
How It Works — Step by Step
EduBert's system rests on a simple scheme: 3 hearts × 3 lives. Let's break it down, because this is exactly where it's easy to get confused (and where older descriptions of this system blurred two different moments together).
A mistake = one heart less
The child solves a task. A wrong answer costs one heart — that's all. The child tries the same task again; they don't skip past it with a wrong result. Three hearts give a buffer: one mistake isn't a catastrophe, two is a "careful" signal, and the third uses up the hearts in this attempt. Hearts show on screen as small icons, so the child always knows how much margin they have.
Out of hearts = one life lost
When all three hearts are gone, the child loses one life (of three). A brief screen appears, and then — this is the crux — the child returns to the same task with a full three hearts. Progress in the level is kept: every task the child already finished in this level still counts. They still have two lives left.
This is not "back to the start." It's a second (and then third) chance right where things got hard. The child sees they "almost made it," and takes on that same task again — and it's repeating the hard spot, rather than escaping it, that builds the skill.
Out of lives = the end of this attempt (but not the record)
Only when the child loses all three lives — nine mistakes in a single attempt — does the level end. Then, and only then, the level resets to the first task, and the progress of that particular attempt is wiped.
But here's the key distinction: the child's permanent record stays. If the level was completed before, its completion, the badge earned, and the best result (stars) do not disappear. "Game over" clears only the current, failed attempt — never what the child has already achieved. There's no red "YOU LOST" and no loss of what was won. There's an invitation: try this level again.
In short: losing one life means returning to the same task with progress kept; losing all three lives means the current attempt ends and you go back to the start of the level — but the permanent record is untouched. Two different moments, worth not confusing.
No Timers — Hearts Don't Vanish on a Clock
One thing sets EduBert apart from many popular games: hearts don't regenerate over time and don't drain on a clock. There's no "wait two hours for your lives to come back" and no "pay to keep playing" — the tricks commercial games use to hold a child at the screen or push a purchase.
Hearts simply refill to three: at the start and on resuming a level, after losing a life, after a restart, and on the next level. They aren't even saved — if the child leaves the game and returns, they always start with a full three hearts. So there's no time pressure and no feeling of "wasting lives": the child can put the tablet down at any moment without losing anything. That's deliberate — learning should happen calmly, not under the pressure of a draining bar. For a parent it means one more thing: the end of a session is set by a conversation, not a clock — you decide when to stop, not the game's mechanics.
Badges: Gold, Silver, Bronze
On completing a level, the child gets a badge based on how many lives they lost along the way:
- Gold — the level completed without losing a single life. The hardest and most satisfying.
- Silver — one life lost along the way. Still an excellent result.
- Bronze — two lives lost. Level passed, learning happened, room to improve.
So every child who completes a level gets at least bronze — there's no punishment for imperfection. And if a child loses all three lives and doesn't complete the level? Then there's no badge for that attempt — but that's not a "minus," just the absence of a reward for an unfinished level. Next time, any of the three is still within reach.
Badges don't disappear: a gold once earned stays gold, even if the child comes back later and plays worse. That makes each badge a small, lasting proof: "I did it."
Why Three Hearts and Three Lives?
The number isn't random. A single life with no buffer (one mistake = the end) would build exactly the fear we want to avoid. Endless tries with no consequence, on the other hand, would drain the point of accuracy — why try, if nothing happens either way?
The 3 × 3 setup lands in the middle: nine chances in one attempt is a margin big enough that a child isn't afraid to begin, yet concrete enough that careful counting is worth it. Three hearts give a "soft" buffer within one task; three lives, a firmer buffer across the whole level. Two floors of protection, both gentle.
Why This Works
The 3 × 3 system has a few features that support learning:
Safety. The child has a big margin — only the ninth mistake in one attempt ends the level. That buffer gives the courage to try instead of guessing out of fear.
Repetition where it's hard. After a mistake and after losing a life, the child returns to the same task. They don't dodge the difficulty; they meet it again until it makes sense. That's what learning is.
No time pressure. With no timers, the child works at their own pace. Rushing is one of the main sources of math anxiety — here it's absent.
Reward for accuracy, not punishment for error. Gold is there for those who want it, but bronze is a success too. This kind of motivation — competence you can feel rather than a stick or a dangled prize — is what self-determination research links to lasting engagement³. The child comes back for a better result because they want to, not because they must.
The Same System in Every World
Hearts, lives, and badges work the same across all of EduBert's worlds — the Park (addition), the City (subtraction), and beyond. The child learns the "language" of the game once and then just counts; they don't have to guess new rules each time. That consistency is deliberate: the less attention the mechanics take, the more is left for the maths itself. It also means moving from addition to subtraction isn't a "new game" for the child, just the next chapter of the same, familiar adventure.
Comparison with Other Systems
Many popular educational games use one of two extreme models:
The "zero tolerance" model — one mistake and start over. Builds frustration, not knowledge. The child learns to avoid mistakes, not to solve problems.
The "no consequences" model — a wrong answer changes nothing, the game moves on. Sounds pleasant, but the child has no reason to try — and gets no signal that anything went wrong.
There's a third, especially problematic one: the "lives on a timer" model from commercial games — you're out of lives, so wait or pay. That's a mechanic designed for retention and purchases, not learning.
EduBert deliberately steers clear of all three. A mistake has a consequence (a heart), but isn't a catastrophe. Accuracy is rewarded (a gold badge), but imperfection isn't punished (bronze is still a success). And lives never depend on a clock or a wallet.
What Parents See — and How to Talk About It
For a parent, the lives-and-badges system is a ready-made language for talking about learning — as long as we use it well. Praise the effort and the comeback, not just the gold: "You lost a life, came back, and finished — that's courage." Silver and bronze aren't "lesser gold," but proof that the level was beaten.
Avoid turning badges into a race or a comparison ("but your friend has all golds"). The goal isn't a gold collection, but calmly facing difficulty. If a child wants to replay a level for a better badge — great; if they'd rather move on with bronze — also fine. And remember the badge is for the child, not the parent: if they're proud of a bronze, don't "fix" that pride by noting they "could have done better." Noticing joy in a small win does more for motivation than pointing at what's still missing.
When a Child Still Can't Pass a Level
Sometimes a child loses all their lives several times in a row on the same level. That's not a failure of the system — it's a sign the operation is still too hard and it's worth stepping back. The good news: because the permanent record and earlier badges stay, going back to easier levels "clears" nothing.
The best move then is to set the screen aside for a while and return to the concrete — count with blocks, with fingers, in an everyday situation. How the Characters Support the System
The motivation system doesn't work in a vacuum — it's reinforced by the Park Adventure characters. This emotional backdrop turns an abstract "lives bar" into a relationship. The child doesn't lose an impersonal "life" — they get a warm reaction from a character and want to try again. Can you "buy" lives or get them back by watching an ad? No. EduBert has no microtransactions and no ads, and lives aren't a commodity — they simply return to three at the start of each level.
